What is a calorie?

Calories. We count them, we cut them, we burn them, but what are they?

Plain and simple, a calorie is a unit of measure. Technically, they measure how much heat energy it takes to raise one gram of water one degree. Certain foods have more calories in them than others. There are three types of macro nutrients, proteins, fats, and carbohydrates. Fat has nine calories per gram while protein and carbohydrates have 4 calories per gram.

The number of calories in a food will vary depending on the size or quantity of the food. For example, a large egg compared to a small egg will vary in calorie content. The same holds true for every fruit and vegetable out there.

To simplify calories, think about gasoline in your car. How many gallons of gas does it take you to go 100 miles? That depends on many things – the type of car you have, road conditions, the way you drive your car, weather conditions, a lot of different things.

The same holds true for your body. Depending on how you use your body will determine how many calories you need to consume each day. If you are active and have lots of muscle mass, you’ll need to consume more calories than if you are sedentary and have excessive amounts of body fat.

Have you ever wondered how many calories you need each day? If you need some help figuring it out hit me up. I’ll be happy to help you.
